As Amazing Spider-Man inches closer to its 800th issue, writers Dan Slott and Christos Gage have teamed up with artist Mike Hawthorne for the Go Down Swinging storyline, which will end Slott’s run on the book.
And he’s going out with a bang, introducing the new mega-villain.
Spider-Man arguably has the best rogue’s gallery at Marvel, and perhaps second in comics behind only DC’s Batman. The list is quite impressive: Doctor Octopus, Vulture, Sandman, Kingpin, Black Cat, Punisher, Lizard, Kraven the Hunter, Shocker, Tombstone, Beetle, Scorpion, Hammerhead, Tarantula, Morbius, and on and on and on. Heck, you can also add in other foils like Flash Thompson and perhaps his most annoying adversary J. Jonah Jameson.
However, Spidey’s greatest enemies over the years have been Norman Osborn, the Green Goblin, who debuted all the way back in Amazing Spider-Man #14 (July 1964), and the villains birthed from the alien symbiote Peter Parker acquired in Marvel Superheroes Secret Wars #8 (December 1984) – Venom and Carnage (originally Eddie Brock and Cletus Kasady, respectively).
So how do Slott, Gage, and Hawthorne add to that pantheon? By combining the two greatest enemies into one.
In Amazing Spider-Man #794 (March 2018), Osborn obtains the Carnage symbiote. Just look at all the crazy in this one panel!
Then, at the end of Amazing Spider-Man #795 (April 2018), the two join to become one. “Do you Green Goblin take Carnage symbiote to be your lawfully wedded wife? By the power invested in me by the state of insanity, I present – the Red Goblin!” The transition is perfectly presented in both the art and the dialogue boxes as Osborn’s desire for revenge on Spidey evolves into a desire to dominate the entire world as Carnage amplifies the insanity.
The first confrontation is on its way in Amazing Spider-Man #796 (May 2018) featuring this simple yet beautiful Spidey headshot cover by Alex Ross, and the awesome ComicXposure exclusive variant cover by Clayton Crain.
It will all come to a head in the upcoming landmark Amazing Spider-Man #800 (September 2018). Get onboard the roller coaster, fasten the harness, and enjoy the ride.
