Marvel Comics has announced a dramatic turn in their entire line coming this May. Marvel promises new titles and new creative teams. Here is the hype trailer for the new initiative, that they are calling “Fresh Start.”
You can see from the video that Thor Odinson has returned to his more familiar visage, but with a golden arm and hammer. Also, Black Panther, Ant-Man, and Wasp are prominently featured, likely to take advantage of their 2018 movies. You may even notice that Miles Morales and Jessica Jones are still part of this initiative despite the loss of their creator, Brian Michael Bendis, to DC.
One of the big changes as part of this Fresh Start is Marvel’s numbering system. Back in April of 2017, Marvel announced Legacy Numbering that had some of their longest-running titles revert to their original volume numbering. It was a way to combine all the different volumes and issues of these series and add them their current “legacy.” For instance, The Avengers jumped from their current Volume 6, #11 (November 2017) all the way to Avengers #672 (December 2017), and Amazing Spider-Man swung from Volume 4, #32 (November 2017) all the way to Amazing Spider-man#789 (December 2017).
Well, now all that is out the door.
Apparently, Marvel felt it was too confusing, so now numbering will go back to where it was pre-Legacy, or start all over again with a new #1. Yep, that’s not confusing at all. I am also sure it has NOTHING to do with the ability to draw new readers to a first issue than trying to get them to jump in at any random issue number along the way.
One of the books that we know will relaunch with a new #1 is The Avengers, which will have Jason Aaron and Ed McGuiness tie the current heroes (including the Big Three of Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor) with the Avengers from 1,000,000 BC that were introduced in Marvel Legacy #1 (November 2017). It will also feature the Robbie Reyes version of Ghost Rider joining the Avengers for the first time.
Venom will also relaunch with a new #1, just in time for HIS movie. Behind the creative team of Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman, the series will feature Eddie Brock’s reunion with the Venom symbiote.
All the changes begin in May. The question is whether Fresh Start will invigorate the line, or turn current readers off and give them a fresh chance to stop buying these books.
