Unless you have been living under a rock, you know that Batman and Catwoman got engaged a few months ago. We even did an article on how that engagement has helped redefine the Dark Knight. Batman Engagement Article However, Bruce and Selina aren’t the only power couple featuring a fierce felonious feline femme fatale (that’s some serious alliteration).
For years, Spider-Man and Black Cat had an on-again, off-again relationship. It was interesting because the Cat liked her “Spider,” but didn’t like Peter Parker! Writer Bill Mantlo and artist Al Milgrom played it perfectly in this great reveal scene from Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man #87 (February 1984).
In the recently-released landmark Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man #300 (April 2018), writer Chip Zdarsky and artist Goran Parlov give us a flashback story to the time when Black Cat was pulling jewelry heists and Spider-Man was trying to get her to reform (another similarity to the Batman- Catwoman relationship). Cat reveals a ring she just stole, and that is when the big moment happens!
As it turns out, Black Cat wasn’t serious but used the moment of shock to get around Peter’s Spider-sense so she could sweep the leg and escape. The fun part of the moment she popped the question is that it is a perfect call-back to Batman #24 (August 2017) when Batman first proposed to Catwoman.
Notice the placement of the two figures in each panel – on a rooftop; holding hands; the moon behind them; the cityscape in the background; the standing person was taken aback. It is an exact match and a very clever twist to recreate the panel with the gender roles reversed.
Spidey and Black Cat never got engaged, and are no longer an item, but it was a nice nod (or taunt) from Marvel to DC about one of the most impactful moments in recent comic history.
