As you know the shadowy pictures of Batman’s junk has been the hottest thing in comics lately. But is it sustainable? DC’s Black Label imprint will continue down this more mature path so will the inclusion of male and female body parts become the norm? If so, what happens to the value of Batman Damned? Batman Damned #1 is at its high point right now and should drop from here.
On the last page of the Teen Titans Special #1 (which is actually the second Teen Titans Special in this volume), they introduce the new Teen Titans team.
Robin – Damian Wayne, the son of Batman and Talia
Kid Flash – Wallace, The fastest kid alive
Red Arrow – Emiko, Ex-assassin
Djinn – 4000-year-old teenager
Roundhouse – Billy Wu, Human wrecking ball
Crush – Daughter of Lobo and ?
Beyond introducing the new team with a cameo appearance for the three new members they set the direction for this new team. The methods used in the past are no longer the methods these Teen Titans will use. Robin is tired of criminals getting out of Arkham only to commit another crime. He is taking control of their punishment in an unorthodox way.
The first action as a new team and the first full appearances of Crush, Roundhouse, and Djinn were in Teen Titans #20. How often have you seen a book with three first appearances? If you read that last sentence and thought “oh, that is an important book”, you would be correct.
As of this writing, the most popular new character is Crush. We have three full appearances of Crush (Teen Titans 20, 21 and 22) and our minds are full of questions.
We know that she is Lobo’s daughter but we don’t know who’s her mom. In an interview, the writer of Teen Titans said: “…her mother could possibly be one of the big hitters of the DC Universe.” Thanks for that ambiguous answer Mr. Adam Glass. Is she going to be a female version of Lobo destroying everything or will she become something more? Does her nasty father know anything about her? In Teen Titans #20 we hear two names that apparently mean something to Crush, David and Lisa Rojas. Who are these people and what’s their connection to Crush? According to DC, we will know more about Crush’s origin and missing chain in Teen Titans #25.
Beyond the questions, there’s potential with Crush. If the creators and writers develop her backstory into something interesting her first appearance could skyrocket. She has gorgeous looks, a vicious nature and a bluntness that rivals Batman. What’s not to love? If she hits big, who will be the first cosplayer to dress like Crush? Please send pictures!
If like me, you’ve heard enough about Bat body parts this is a welcome distraction. Until we know more, I suggest picking up a copy of Teen Titans #20 especially the Jorge Jimenez Variant, with the Crush initial design on the cover. The regular edition can be picked up at cover price while the variant has already taken a jump in price. At cover price, the potential for an increase in value is enormous. The Alex Garner Variant for issue #22 is a beautiful rendering of Crush. (to the right)
